As a high school senior, Anderson was a Top 100 Recruit by ESPN and was named the Gatorade Maryland Boys Basketball Player of the Year. He played college basketball at Virginia where in his junior season was named second-team All-ACC and third-team All-American by the NABC.
In April 2015, Anderson declared for the NBA draft, forgoing his senior year and was selected 21st overall by the Dallas Mavericks.
In July 2019, Anderson traveled to Tanzania with H4H teammates Malcolm Brogdon and Joe Harris to witness the opening of the first Hoops2O well, which brought the gift of clean water to communities in need.
